What a Clan! From lowly beginnings they achieved greatness. For 400 years Clan Cameron were one of the most powerful clans in the Western Highlands of Scotland. In the late 13th century and early 14th century they were instrumental in defending the independence of Scotland as a separate nation, first supporting Andrew Moray and William Wallace, and then King Robert the Bruce.<br>Despite this support, the Camerons spent much of their time and energy fighting against domination from Edinburgh and the early Stewart Kings. They were also involved in a 350 year deadly feud with Clan Mackintosh and their allies in the Clan Chattan Confederacy.<br>The heartland of Clan Cameron is Lochaber, with the great Ben Nevis range and the Mamore mountains shadowing their glens and settlements.<br>During the Civil Wars of the 17th century the Camerons strongly supported the Royalist Cause of both King Charles I and King Charles II and suffered dearly for this loyalty. During the Jacobite Wars of the late 17th and 18th centuries Clan Cameron stood behind the exiled Stuart Monarchs and fought for them in every Rebellion. The Clan and its Chiefs were suppressed and exiled as a result and many of the clan were driven out of their lands and scattered all over the world.<br>However, Clan Cameron remain a strong and vibrant Scottish Clan with many branches all over the globe and who have contributed positively to the development of many nations.
