For a Fifties era aircraft, the F-8 Crusader was far ahead of its time. It had remarkable variable incidence wings which allowed it to significantly increase lift for take-off runs. It was the first us aircraft capable of flying faster than 1,000 mph. Additionally, it was the last us fighter aircraft to be equipped with guns (4 20mm autocannons) as the primary armament.
